Hong Kong Police Arrest Six Under New Security Law for Sedition
May 28, 2024, 09:50 AM
Hong Kong's national security police have made their first arrests under the new security law, detaining six individuals for allegedly posting seditious messages online. Among those arrested is Chow Hang-Tung, a jailed Tiananmen activist. The arrests come just days ahead of the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown. The new security law, known as the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, took effect on March 23, 2024. The police stated that the arrests, made on May 28, were related to social media posts concerning an upcoming sensitive date. This marks the first enforcement of Article 23 under the national security legislation.
