Germany Votes Against EU's 45% Tariffs on Chinese EVs for Five Years Amid Industry Pressure
Oct 4, 2024, 11:25 AM
Germany has voted against the European Union's proposal to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), despite significant pressure from its automotive industry and coalition partners. German carmakers, such as Volkswagen and BMW, have expressed strong opposition to the tariffs, citing potential negative impacts on their competitiveness and sales in China, which accounts for a substantial portion of their market. Chancellor Olaf Scholz's decision to oppose the tariffs has sparked controversy and highlighted divisions within the EU. Despite Germany's opposition, the EU has approved tariffs of up to 45% on Chinese EVs, with the European Commission set to finalize the decision. The move aims to counteract what the EU perceives as unfair subsidies by China but has raised concerns about a potential trade conflict. Sweden has abstained from the vote, seeking a special deal for Volvo Cars. China has firmly opposed the tariffs, calling them unfair and a violation of WTO rules, and has urged the EU to resolve the issue through negotiations. Ursula von der Leyen's China policy faces a test as the tariffs, which will last for five years, were approved with 10 votes in favor and 12 abstentions.
