'Furiosa' and 'Garfield' Vie for Top Spot with $31 Million in Slow Memorial Day Weekend Box Office
May 25, 2024, 02:18 PM
George Miller’s 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' is leading the box office over the Memorial Day weekend, with initial projections estimating a domestic gross of $40 million to $45 million. However, the film earned $3.5 million from Thursday previews and $10.2 million on Friday, including previews. By Sunday, it had grossed $25.55 million domestically over the three-day weekend and an estimated $31 million through Monday. Internationally, 'Furiosa' debuted with $33.3 million, bringing its global total to $58.9 million. Despite the strong start, the Memorial Day weekend box office is expected to be the lowest in decades, with 'Furiosa' and Sony’s animated 'The Garfield Movie' vying for the top spot, each generating roughly $25 million over the weekend. 'Furiosa' had a production budget of $168 million. 'The Garfield Movie' earned $1.9 million from Thursday previews.
