Denmark to Introduce World's First Carbon Tax on Agriculture by 2030, Charging €100 a Cow
Jun 25, 2024, 10:35 AM
Denmark will introduce a levy on farm emissions, making it one of the world’s first carbon taxes on agriculture. This pioneering initiative aims to help the Nordic nation reach its 2030 climate target and has garnered support from key industry and environmental groups. The government will impose the tax specifically on livestock carbon dioxide emissions, with cattle farmers set to be charged almost €100 a year for each cow. The Novo Nordisk Foundation will finance $1.4 billion of the plan. Denmark, a major pork and dairy exporter, hopes to inspire other countries to follow suit.
