DNA Analysis Reveals True Identities of 14 Pompeii Victims
Nov 7, 2024, 04:43 PM
Recent DNA analysis has provided new insights into the identities of individuals buried in the ancient city of Pompeii, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption. The study, led by David Caramelli, David Reich, and Alissa Mittnik, involved examining the genetic relationships, sex, and ancestry of 14 individuals. Contrary to common assumptions, the research revealed that some of the casts of victims were not who they were previously thought to be. For instance, one individual previously identified as a 'mother' in a scene of a cowering family was actually a man. The findings challenge long-held beliefs about the victims of Pompeii and offer a more nuanced understanding of their identities. The research was conducted with the support of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.
