Florida's Amendment 4 Fails with 57% Support, Leaving Six-Week Abortion Ban in Place
Nov 6, 2024, 02:14 AM
Florida voters have rejected Amendment 4, a ballot measure that sought to enshrine abortion rights in the state's constitution and overturn Florida's six-week abortion ban. The amendment required a 60% majority to pass but received approximately 57% support, falling short of the threshold despite majority backing. Florida is the only state among ten with abortion initiatives that required a 60% supermajority for constitutional amendments, a hurdle that contributed to the measure's failure. Notably, over one million more voters supported Amendment 4 than voted to re-elect Governor Ron DeSantis in 2022. The defeat of the amendment marks a significant victory for DeSantis and state Republicans, and is one of the first major setbacks for pro-abortion rights advocates since the overturn of Roe v. Wade.
