Fentanyl Found in Over Half of Gulf Dolphins: Texas A&M Study Highlights Longstanding Problem
Dec 6, 2024, 05:29 PM
A new study by researchers from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has found traces of fentanyl and other pharmaceuticals in bottlenose dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico. Analyzing samples from 18 dolphins, they discovered that more than half had fentanyl present in their blubber. The findings raise concerns that the illegal drug trade is impacting marine life, and researchers believe 'this is a longstanding problem' that could affect the overall health of the oceans. They are also concerned that the substance might be present in other marine life. The study was published in the journal iScience.
