1,800-Year-Old Amulet with Oldest Christian Inscription Found in Germany
Dec 16, 2024, 09:04 AM
Archaeologists have unearthed a 1,800-year-old silver amulet near Frankfurt, Germany, dating back to between 230 and 270 AD, which contains what is believed to be the oldest known evidence of Christianity north of the Alps. The amulet, measuring 3.5 cm in size and found in the Roman city of Nida, was digitally unrolled using advanced computer tomography technology to reveal an 18-line Latin inscription invoking Jesus Christ and Saint Titus. The text, described as 'purely Christian,' makes no reference to other faiths like Judaism or paganism, which was unusual for the time. This discovery has been hailed as a scientific sensation, potentially rewriting the history of Christianity in the region by pushing back its known presence by 50 to 100 years.
