Alabama A&M's LB Burnett Dies at 20 After Injury in Magic City Classic; Death Initially Misreported
Nov 29, 2024, 08:32 PM
Alabama A&M University football player, 20-year-old linebacker and redshirt freshman, Medrick Burnett Jr., died on Wednesday at 5:43 p.m. at UAB Hospital, according to Jefferson County coroner Matt Angelo. Burnett suffered a head injury during the Magic City Classic against Alabama State University on October 26, where he sustained several brain bleeds following a head-on collision during a tackle. Earlier this week, Alabama A&M erroneously announced his death, leading to widespread media misinformation. The university later retracted the statement, clarifying that Burnett was alive and in stable condition. However, he succumbed to his injuries nearly five weeks after the incident. The football community mourns the loss of a young man who had a very bright future ahead of him.
