The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognisance of the deaths of three UPSC aspirants who drowned in the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar following heavy rains. The court has issued notices to the Centre, Delhi government, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), demanding responses on safety norms in coaching centres. The tragic event has highlighted the urgent need for stringent safety regulations in educational institutions. Special CP Sharad Agarwal and DCP Central M Harshavardhan arrived at the coaching institute following the incident. The Supreme Court emphasized that no institute should operate unless they comply with safety norms, describing the coaching centres as 'death chambers' playing with students' lives.
