Bob Uecker, 'Mr. Baseball' and Iconic Brewers Broadcaster and 'Major League' Actor, Dies at 90
Jan 16, 2025, 04:38 PM
Bob Uecker, the legendary broadcaster, comedian, and former Major League Baseball player known as "Mr. Baseball," has died at the age of 90, the Milwaukee Brewers announced. "Today we take on the heaviest of burdens," the Brewers said in a statement. Uecker, a Milwaukee native, spent six seasons as a catcher in the majors from 1962 to 1967, playing for the Braves, Cardinals, and Phillies. Despite a modest playing career, he became famous for his self-deprecating humor, once joking, "I must be in the front row," in a popular Miller Lite commercial. After retiring as a player, Uecker embarked on a broadcasting career that spanned more than half a century, becoming the voice of the Brewers starting in 1971. He was renowned for his wit, which endeared him to fans and colleagues alike. Uecker gained national fame through his appearances on "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson, where he was dubbed "Mr. Baseball," and starred in the sitcom "Mr. Belvedere." He also played the memorable announcer Harry Doyle in the "Major League" film series, coining the iconic line "Juuust a bit outside." Beyond broadcasting, Uecker was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in recognition of his appearances at WrestleMania. He received the Ford C. Frick Award from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003, honoring his excellence in broadcasting. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred stated, "Bob was the genuine item: always the funniest person in any room he was in, and always an outstanding ambassador for our National Pastime." Uecker's passing marks the loss of a beloved figure who brought joy and laughter to generations of baseball fans.
