US Dementia Cases to Reach 1 Million Annually by 2060, Study Finds
Jan 14, 2025, 07:07 AM
A new study published in the journal Nature Medicine projects that the number of new dementia cases in the United States will double by 2060, rising from approximately 514,000 cases annually in 2020 to about 1 million cases per year. The research indicates that the lifetime risk of developing dementia after age 55 is 42%, with higher risks observed among women, Black adults, and carriers of the APOE ε4 gene variant. The study underscores the urgent need for policies to support healthy aging and highlights the importance of addressing health disparities, as the projected increase in dementia cases is particularly pronounced among Black adults.
