Ivan Boesky, Key Figure in 1980s Insider Trading Scandal, Dies at 87, NYT Reports
May 20, 2024, 05:17 PM
Ivan Boesky, a prominent Wall Street financier in the 1980s, has died at the age of 87, the New York Times reports. Boesky was a central figure in one of the largest insider trading scandals of the era, which ultimately led to his conviction and imprisonment. His activities and subsequent downfall epitomized the greed and corruption associated with Wall Street during that time. Boesky's cooperation with the government was instrumental in exposing the extent of insider trading on Wall Street. He was also known for his controversial speech at UC Berkeley in 1986, where he famously stated, 'I think greed is healthy.' Boesky's life and career served as an inspiration for the character Gordon Gekko in the movie 'Wall Street.' He paid a record $100 million fine for insider trading.
