Supreme Court, in 7-1 Decision, Allows EPA's Power Plant Emissions Rule Targeting 90% Reduction by 2032
Oct 16, 2024, 07:37 PM
The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to enforce its most stringent greenhouse gas emissions limits for power plants while legal challenges proceed, providing a significant boost to the Biden administration's efforts to combat climate change. In a 7-1 decision, the justices declined to block the EPA's rule, which aims to reduce carbon pollution from coal-fired and gas-fired power plants by 90% by 2032. Justice Clarence Thomas dissented. The court's decision allows the EPA to proceed with implementing the rule as lawsuits from over 20 Republican-led states, companies, and industry groups continue in lower courts.
