Gitanas Nausėda Wins Second Term in Lithuanian Presidential Election with 81.7% of Votes
May 26, 2024, 06:31 PM
Lithuania held its presidential election run-off on Sunday, with incumbent President Gitanas Nausėda facing off against Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė. The election, heavily influenced by security concerns related to neighboring Russia, saw Nausėda securing a commanding lead early in the vote count. Official data indicated that Nausėda was supported by 81.7% of votes after about 29% of ballots had been counted. As the counting progressed, Nausėda maintained his lead and was poised to secure a second five-year term. Nausėda led by a large margin in 1,650 of 1,895 polling stations. Prime Minister Šimonytė conceded defeat and congratulated Nausėda on his victory. The election underscores Lithuania's prioritization of defense and security in the face of regional tensions.
