Israeli Airstrikes on Yemen's Sanaa Airport Kill Three, Wound Eleven; WHO Chief Safe
Dec 26, 2024, 04:43 PM
The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was at Sanaa International Airport in Yemen when it was hit by Israeli airstrikes. According to Ghebreyesus, one of the plane's crew members was injured, and at least three people were reported killed at the airport, with eleven others wounded. The strikes caused damage to the air traffic control tower, the departure lounge, and the runway, which were just meters away from where Ghebreyesus and his UN colleagues were located. Ghebreyesus and his colleagues are safe but will need to wait for the damage to be repaired before they can leave Yemen. The Israeli military confirmed that it had struck multiple targets linked to the Houthi movement in Yemen, including Sanaa International Airport, the Hezyaz and Ras Kanatib power stations, and military infrastructure in the ports of Hodeidah, Salif, and Ras Issa. The strikes were in response to repeated Houthi attacks on Israel.
