New York Enacts SAFE for Kids Act to Protect Children's Online Privacy and Mental Health on June 20
Jun 20, 2024, 11:00 PM
New York State has enacted two new laws aimed at protecting children's privacy and mental health online. Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul signed the legislation, known as the SAFE for Kids Act, into law on June 20. The laws make it illegal for anyone under 18 to use addictive features on social media platforms and restrict internet companies' behaviors towards users under 18. The legislation targets algorithms, data collection, and notifications at night. Governor Hochul was joined by New York State Attorney General, Senator Andrew Gounardes, and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic during the signing ceremony at UFT.
