Sony Pictures Acquires Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Landmark Deal, First in 75 Years
Jun 12, 2024, 06:30 PM
Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, a popular dine-in movie theater chain based in Austin, Texas. This landmark deal marks the first time in over 75 years that a major Hollywood studio owns a movie theater chain, following the relaxation of the Paramount Consent Decrees. Alamo Drafthouse, known for its creative cocktails, extensive food menu, and strict 'no talking, no texting' policies, operates 35 locations across 25 cities, including a location in downtown Los Angeles. The acquisition also includes Fantastic Fest, a genre film festival. Sony has promised to preserve Alamo Drafthouse's distinctive movie-dining experience and will continue to welcome content from all studios and distributors. Michael Kustermann will remain CEO. The financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.
