Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and Three Others Indicted on Bribery Charges, Facing Up to 95 Years
Jan 17, 2025, 05:05 PM
Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao has been indicted on federal bribery and fraud charges, along with her longtime partner Andre Jones, and businessmen David Duong and his son Andy Duong. The charges stem from an FBI corruption investigation that began after a raid on Thao's home in June 2024. The indictment alleges that Thao and Jones accepted bribes from the Duongs in exchange for political favors, including a $95,000 payment disguised as wages for a no-show job for Jones. Additionally, the Duongs allegedly funded a $75,000 negative mailer campaign targeting Thao's opponents during the 2022 mayoral election. Thao, who was recalled from office in November 2024, faces up to 95 years in prison if convicted on all charges. The defendants were arraigned in Oakland federal court, where Thao pleaded not guilty.
