VisitGreek Tanker Sounion Ablaze and Adrift After Suspected Houthi Attack in Red Sea
Aug 21, 2024, 01:29 PM
A Greek-flagged oil tanker, the Sounion, was attacked in the Red Sea, 77 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen's Hodeidah. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the vessel was approached by two small boats and struck by three unidentified projectiles, suspected to be launched by Yemen's Houthi rebels. The attack left the ship on fire and without engine power, rendering it 'not under command.' Despite the severe damage, no casualties have been reported among the crew. The incident marks the third attack on a vessel operated by Greece's Delta Tankers in recent weeks, highlighting ongoing maritime security challenges in the region.
