Maia Sandu Wins Moldova's Runoff Election Amid Russian Interference Claims
Nov 3, 2024, 08:13 PM
Moldova held the second round of its presidential election on November 3, 2024, amid allegations of significant Russian interference. Incumbent pro-European Union President Maia Sandu faced pro-Russian former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo. Reports emerged of Russian efforts to disrupt the vote, including bomb threats at polling stations abroad, cyberattacks targeting election infrastructure, and organized transportation of voters from Russia and Transnistria. Prime Minister Dorin Recean described anonymous threats as an attempt to create panic and fear ahead of the vote. Sandu urged citizens to vote, stating that 'thieves want to buy the vote and the country.' Initial results showed Stoianoglo leading with approximately 52% of the vote. However, as diaspora votes were counted—where about 300,000 voters participated—Sandu overtook Stoianoglo, ultimately securing around 54% of the vote with 97% of ballots counted. Sandu declared victory, securing a second term. The result was seen as a significant setback for Russia's influence and a reaffirmation of Moldova's European Union aspirations.
