Japan, UK, Italy Launch GCAP Joint Venture for Next-Gen Fighter Jet by 2035
Dec 13, 2024, 01:31 PM
Japan, the United Kingdom, and Italy have reached an agreement to establish a joint venture for the development of a next-generation fighter jet under the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). The agreement, signed by BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. (JAIEC), outlines equal investment from each country, with each holding a 33.3% share in the venture. The new company, which will be headquartered in the UK, aims to deliver the aircraft by 2035, with its lifecycle extending beyond 2070. This collaboration seeks to replace the Eurofighter Typhoons of the UK and Italy, as well as Japan's F-2 combat jets, and will incorporate advanced technology to ensure a significant leap in combat air capabilities. The venture's establishment is anticipated by mid-2025, subject to regulatory approval.
