Lula Signs Law for Public Access to Sexual Offenders' Data, Vetoes Post-Sentence Disclosure
Nov 28, 2024, 04:32 PM
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed into law the creation of a National Registry of Pedophiles and Sexual Predators, allowing public access to the names and CPFs of individuals convicted of sexual crimes in first instance, under Lei 15.035/2024. The legislation, which was originally proposed by the Chamber of Deputies as PL 6212/2023, aims to protect children and adolescents from sexual abuse and violence. However, Lula vetoed a portion of the law that would have made the names and CPFs of sexual offenders public for up to ten years after serving their sentence, citing concerns over the dignity and privacy rights of the convicted individuals. The initiative was spearheaded by Senadora Margareth Buzetti.
