South Korea Declares National Mourning for 179 Dead in Jeju Air Crash at Muan Airport, Two Survive
Dec 29, 2024, 01:00 PM
South Korea's acting President Choi Sang-mok has declared a seven-day national mourning period following a tragic plane crash at Muan International Airport, which resulted in 179 deaths. The mourning period will last until January 4. The crash involved a Jeju Air flight arriving from Bangkok, carrying 175 passengers and six crew members. The aircraft attempted a belly landing after receiving a bird strike warning, but veered off the runway and collided with a wall, leading to a fire that destroyed the fuselage. Only two crew members survived the incident, which is considered the deadliest air accident in South Korea's history. Muan County has been designated as a special disaster zone in response to the tragedy.
