SpaceX Launches 20 Starlink Satellites, Completing Direct-to-Cell Constellation for Global Connectivity
Dec 5, 2024, 04:08 AM
SpaceX has successfully launched 20 Starlink satellites via a Falcon 9 rocket, completing the first orbital shell of its Direct to Cell constellation, consisting of 24 planes of 13 satellites per plane at a 53-degree inclination. Once raised to a 360 km orbit, these satellites will enable unmodified cellphones to connect directly, providing internet connectivity in remote areas and eliminating dead zones. Elon Musk highlighted the service's potential during severe natural disasters, stating that "even if all the cell towers are taken out, your phone will still work." The service offers bandwidth of approximately 10Mb per beam, with future constellations expected to enhance capability. The Direct to Cell service is now open to any telecommunications company worldwide, following approval from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The collaboration between Starlink and T-Mobile aims to revolutionize mobile connectivity and ensure continuous service even in the most challenging conditions.
