US Charges Syrian Officials Hassan and Mahmoud with War Crimes for Torturing Americans and Syrians

US prosecutors have charged two senior Syrian officials, Jamil Hassan and Abd al-Salam Mahmoud, of the Air Force Intelligence Directorate, with war crimes for overseeing torture against peaceful protesters and political prisoners, including Americans and Syrians, such as a 26-year-old American woman believed to have been executed. The indictment, unsealed by a grand jury in the Northern District of Illinois, accuses the former intelligence officials of ordering severe torture methods such as electric shocks, nail removal, and pouring acid at a notorious prison under the Assad regime.
