DHS Grants Temporary Protected Status to Lebanese Nationals in U.S. as of Yesterday for 18 Months
Oct 17, 2024, 01:37 PM
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that it will provide Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Lebanese nationals currently residing in the United States as of yesterday. The decision comes in response to the escalating armed conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon. Senate Democrats, including Senator Dick Durbin and Senator Gary Peters, had urged President Biden to designate Lebanon for TPS to protect Lebanese nationals from being forced to return to these dire conditions. The TPS designation will last for 18 months and will allow recipients to apply for work authorization. The administration had previously offered a different form of protection for Lebanese immigrants in July.
