Evan Gershkovich's Closed-Door Espionage Trial Begins in Yekaterinburg, Russia
Jun 26, 2024, 07:24 AM
The espionage trial of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich has commenced in Yekaterinburg, Russia, on June 26, 2024. The trial is being held behind closed doors, with no reporters, friends, or family allowed to attend. Gershkovich, who was detained in March 2023, appeared shaven-headed in court and faces charges of spying for the CIA, which he, his employer, and the U.S. government vehemently deny. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison. This is the first time since the Cold War that a Western journalist has been charged with espionage in Russia. The U.S. embassy in Russia has stated that Moscow has not provided any evidence to support the charges against Gershkovich. The Wall Street Journal has condemned the trial as a 'sham' process. The trial is being overseen by the Sverdlovsk Regional Court.
