Over 10,000 Migrants Cross Channel to UK in Small Boats in 2024, 35% Increase, Criticism for Sunak
May 25, 2024, 09:56 AM
More than 10,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel into the UK in 2024, marking a 35% increase from last year. The Home Office reports that the number of arrivals has reached 10,036 as of May 24, with the largest single day of crossings occurring on May 1, when 711 people arrived. This surge is attributed to the typically calmer sea conditions and good weather during this period. The current rate of arrivals suggests the UK may see a record 50,000+ migrants by the end of the year. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who pledged to 'stop the boats,' faces criticism for failing to control the borders. This milestone was reached a month earlier than in the record year of 2022.
