Venezuela's Election Results Questioned as Opposition's Edmundo González Claims Victory Over Nicolás Maduro
Aug 4, 2024, 11:38 PM
Venezuela's recent presidential election results are under scrutiny as multiple sources, including the Associated Press and the Washington Post, report that opposition candidate Edmundo González likely received more votes than incumbent President Nicolás Maduro. Maria Corina Machado, a key opposition figure, announced that her coalition had gathered more than two-thirds of vote tally sheets from polling centers nationwide, indicating Maduro lost his reelection bid. An AP analysis suggests González received 6.89 million votes, nearly half a million more than Maduro. Despite this, authorities have declared Maduro the winner but have yet to produce voting tallies to substantiate this claim. The Washington Post review of over 23,000 precinct-level tally sheets supports the opposition's assertion that González likely received more than twice as many votes as Maduro. The opposition has secured 80% of the vote tally sheets.
