Civilian Drone Collision Grounds Canadair CL-415 Battling Palisades Fire

On January 9, 2025, a Canadair CL-415 "Super Scooper" firefighting aircraft leased from Quebec collided with a civilian drone while battling the Palisades Fire in Los Angeles. The incident occurred despite a Temporary Flight Restriction issued by the FAA over the area. The aircraft sustained a football-sized hole in its wing but landed safely. As a result, one of only two such aircraft fighting the fire has been grounded, hindering efforts against the fast-moving blaze. The FAA is investigating the collision, and officials warn that flying drones in restricted airspace is illegal and can result in severe fines and up to 12 months in prison. The LA County Fire Department emphasized the importance of keeping the airspace clear for emergency responders. The FBI in Los Angeles has deployed technology to prevent unauthorized drones from interfering with firefighting efforts. All firefighting aircraft were temporarily grounded following the incident.
