DOT Launches Inquiry into Major U.S. Airlines' Frequent Flyer Programs for Fairness and Transparency
Sep 5, 2024, 06:20 PM
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has launched a formal inquiry into the frequent flyer and rewards programs of the four largest U.S. airlines: Delta Air Lines Inc., American Airlines Group Inc., United Airlines Holdings Inc., and Southwest Airlines Co. This investigation, announced on September 5, aims to determine whether these programs are fair to consumers and to address potential issues such as rewards devaluation tactics, hidden pricing, junk fees, and antitrust concerns. The inquiry follows a letter from Senator Durbin expressing concerns about unfair and deceptive practices in these programs. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the economic value of points and miles for consumers and the need for transparency and fairness in these programs.
