Donald Trump Wins 2024 Election with 49.85% Popular Vote and Historic Nationwide Republican Shift
Nov 27, 2024, 02:50 PM
Donald Trump has secured his second term as President of the United States in the 2024 election. While Trump claimed a significant mandate, his victory was marked by a slim popular vote margin of 1.58 percentage points over Kamala Harris, with 49.85% of the vote to Harris's 48.27%. This makes it one of the narrowest margins in presidential elections since 1900, and the fifth-narrowest according to the Cook Political Report. Notably, Trump won with a plurality rather than a majority of votes. Despite the tight margin, the election saw a historic nationwide shift toward the Republican Party, with all 50 states and Washington D.C. moving to the right compared to the 2020 election. This marks the first time since 1980 that every state shifted toward one party. In Texas, exit polls showed first-time voters favoring Trump by a wide margin of 77% to 23%. Analysts describe the result as decisive but not overwhelming, challenging the narrative of a landslide or a strong mandate.
