World's Oldest Person, Guinness-Recognized Tomiko Itooka, Dies at 116 in Ashiya City
Jan 4, 2025, 11:24 AM
Tomiko Itooka, recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest person, has died of natural causes at age 116. She passed away on December 29 in a nursing home in Ashiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, where she had resided since 2019. Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka as the eldest of three sisters, Itooka managed her husband's textile business during World War II. She was known for her fondness for lactic acid drinks and bananas, which she credited for her longevity, and she remarkably climbed Mount Ontake twice. She became the world's oldest person after the death of Spain's Maria Branyas Morera, who passed away at age 117 in August last year. Itooka is survived by her four children and five grandchildren. The mayor of Ashiya City expressed condolences upon her passing.
