Philippine and Chinese Ships Collide Near Spratly Islands in Disputed South China Sea
Jun 17, 2024, 03:18 AM
A Philippine supply ship collided with a Chinese vessel near the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea on Monday. The incident occurred after the Philippine ship allegedly intruded into waters near the Second Thomas Shoal, also known as Ayungin Shoal, which China claims as part of its Nansha Islands. The China Coast Guard reported that the Philippine vessel ignored multiple warnings before the collision at 5:59 am. This marks the first such incident under Beijing's new coastguard law, which allows Chinese authorities to take control measures against foreign vessels in disputed waters. Manila has rejected Beijing's account of the incident as 'misleading.'
