US Cracks Down on 140 Chinese Chip Firms, Targets AI, HBM Chips, and Huawei
Dec 2, 2024, 10:09 AM
The United States has launched its third crackdown in as many years on China's semiconductor industry, restricting exports to 140 Chinese companies, including chip equipment makers Naura Technology Group, Piotech, SMIC, and technology giants Huawei and ByteDance. The Biden administration announced sweeping new export controls aimed at curbing China's access to advanced chipmaking tools, artificial intelligence chips, and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used in AI applications and military modernization. The measures include adding 24 new entities to the Entity List and are intended to slow China's technological advancements, particularly in AI and military applications. China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded by stating that these actions seriously violate the principles of a market economy and fair competition, and that China will take measures to protect the legal rights of Chinese companies. The crackdown intensifies the ongoing chip war between the US and China, with the US aiming to hinder China's progress in advanced semiconductor development and AI capabilities.
