Researchers Identify PEIZO 2 Receptor Behind 'Wet Dog' Shake
Nov 8, 2024, 08:41 AM
Researchers have uncovered the neurological secret behind the characteristic 'wet dog' shaking behavior in animals. The study, published in Science Magazine, identifies a specific class of touch receptors and neurons, known as the PEIZO 2 receptor, that connect the spinal cord to the brain. This neural circuit triggers the rapid shaking behavior in mice and other animals to shake off water, which is believed to occur because the water 'tickles' the animals. The mystery of why wet dogs shake themselves dry has been solved.
