Houston Astros Release 37-Year-Old José Abreu Amid Struggles, Owing $30 Million
Jun 14, 2024, 06:20 PM
The Houston Astros have released first baseman José Abreu, who was in the second year of a three-year, $58.5 million contract. Abreu, a former American League MVP, had struggled significantly this season, batting .124 with two home runs in 35 games. The Astros will still owe Abreu over $30 million for the remaining duration of his contract. Abreu, who is 37 years old, had a negative WAR during his 176 games with the Astros. The decision to release Abreu comes as the team could no longer afford to keep him on the roster due to his poor performance. General Manager Dana Brown announced the move, and the team is expected to announce a corresponding roster change later today, with Cooper Hummel being selected from Triple A Sugar Land.
