David Trone Spends $62M on Maryland Senate Bid, Outspends Biden Amid Election Uncertainty
May 13, 2024, 04:00 AM
Rep. David Trone, a multimillionaire and owner of a wine retail business, has invested a substantial amount of his personal wealth, nearly $62 million, into his campaign for the Maryland Senate seat. This spending includes $54 million loaned to his campaign and $45.7 million spent on political advertisements, as reported by AdImpact. Trone's expenditure on ads surpasses that of President Biden's re-election campaign nationwide. Despite his financial commitment, it remains uncertain if this will secure his election. Additionally, AIPAC's super PAC, United Democracy Project, has also invested significantly, contributing $4.1 million to support another candidate, Sarah, in the same race. Trone has been a below-average candidate in the last three House elections, according to the WAR overperformance metric, with scores of R+2 in 2018, R+3 in 2020, and R+1 in 2022.
