EU's USB-C Charger Mandate Starts Today; Apple Halts Sale of Older iPhones

Starting December 28, 2024, the European Union's regulation requiring a universal USB-C (USB Type-C) charging port for all new portable electronic devices comes into effect. This mandate applies to smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, e-readers, keyboards, mice, handheld video game consoles, and other small and medium-sized devices sold within the EU. The legislation, passed two years ago, aims to simplify charging and reduce electronic waste by an estimated 11,000 tonnes annually by eliminating the need for multiple chargers, benefiting both consumers and the environment. Companies must now ensure that their devices are equipped with a USB-C port, regardless of the manufacturer. Apple, for instance, has ceased selling the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone SE 3 in several EU countries as these models lack USB-C ports. The regulation will extend to laptops starting April 28, 2026.
