VisitTSMC to Halt Advanced 7nm AI Chip Shipments to China Starting November 11 Under U.S. Restrictions
Nov 9, 2024, 04:06 PM
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, has announced it will suspend production of advanced AI chips for Chinese customers starting on Monday, November 11. The decision follows a directive from the U.S. Department of Commerce, which sent a letter imposing export restrictions to limit China's access to advanced semiconductor technology used in artificial intelligence applications. TSMC has notified Chinese chip design companies that future supplies of semiconductors at process nodes of 7 nanometers or smaller will require U.S. government approval. The move is aimed at addressing concerns over potential connections with Huawei and is expected to impact China's AI ambitions and the global technology industry.
