VisitEPA Sets Strict PFAS Limits in Drinking Water, Designates as Hazardous
Apr 19, 2024, 03:02 PM
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently taken significant actions concerning per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly known as 'forever chemicals'. The EPA has finalized national primary drinking water regulations, setting stringent limits for six specific PFAS chemicals. This landmark rule aims to protect public health by reducing the permissible levels of these chemicals in drinking water. Additionally, the EPA has designated two of the most commonly used PFAS compounds as hazardous substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), commonly known as the Superfund law. This designation will enable the EPA to hold polluters accountable for cleanup efforts and ensure quicker remediation of contaminated sites. These measures come in response to growing health concerns linked to PFAS, which are associated with various serious health conditions, including cancer.
