Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, Magnitude -4.9 and Brighter than Jupiter, to be Visible Starting October 12, 2024
Oct 11, 2024, 04:55 PM
Comet C/2023 A3, known as Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, is approaching Earth and is expected to be visible to the naked eye starting October 12, 2024. The comet, which was last seen when Neanderthals roamed the Earth, has been reported to be brighter than Jupiter, with an observed magnitude of -4.9, making it one of the brightest comets in recent history. Astronomers anticipate that it will be at its closest approach on October 12, appearing in the western sky after sunset. Observers in the Northern Hemisphere are encouraged to look west approximately 45 minutes after sunset for the best chance to see this rare cosmic event. The comet is expected to remain visible through the end of October, providing a unique opportunity for sky-gazers. This event is particularly significant as the comet will not return for another 80,000 years.
