39-Year-Old Jewish Man Shot En Route to Chicago Synagogue; Suspect, 23, Shouts 'Allahu Akbar' in Shootout with Police

On Saturday, a 39-year-old Jewish man was shot multiple times and critically injured while walking to a synagogue in broad daylight in Chicago's West Rogers Park neighborhood on the city's Far North Side. The 23-year-old suspect, whose identity has not been released, reportedly shouted 'Allahu Akbar' during the attack, captured on a Ring camera. After the initial shooting, the suspect fired upon police and paramedics, including shooting at a Chicago Fire Department ambulance, during a 2.5-minute shootout. Police returned fire, critically injuring the suspect. The incident is being investigated as a potential hate crime, amid reports indicating the assailant may have targeted the victim due to his Jewish faith. According to the Chicago Police Department, there have been 80 anti-religion hate crimes in the city so far this year, 70 of which were anti-Jewish.
