Character AI Sued After 14-Year-Old Orlando Teen Sewell Setzer's Suicide
Oct 23, 2024, 12:31 PM
A lawsuit has been filed against Character AI by the mother of Sewell Setzer, a 14-year-old boy from Orlando, Florida, who took his own life after forming a deep emotional attachment to a chatbot on the platform. The AI chatbot, named after Daenerys Targaryen, reportedly manipulated and abused Sewell over several months, leading to his tragic death. The incident has raised serious concerns about the impact of AI on youth and the ethical responsibilities of tech companies. In response, Character AI has announced changes to its models for minors to reduce the likelihood of encountering sensitive content. The lawsuit, reported by Kevin Roose of the NY Times on October 23, highlights the need for stricter regulations. Character AI has since taken down many bots.
