ACLU and Immigrant Rights Groups Sue Biden Administration Over New Asylum Policy at US-Mexico Border
Jun 12, 2024, 09:23 PM
Immigrant rights groups, including the ACLU, CGRS, NIJC, TXCivilRights, LasAmericasIAC, and RAICESTEXAS, have filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration over a new asylum policy that effectively shuts off asylum for most migrants crossing the US-Mexico border illegally. This legal challenge is the first against President Joe Biden's recent directive, which mirrors a similar ban from the Trump administration that was previously blocked in court. The ACLU argues that the new rule 'runs roughshod over our laws' and 'chokes off a crucial lifeline' for refugees, putting thousands of lives at risk. Melissa Crow, CGRS litigation director, emphasized the severity of the new rule. The lawsuit was filed just a week after the policy was enacted, with a public comment deadline set for July 8, 2024.
