FAU Fires Tom Herman After Loss to Temple; Chad Lunsford Named Interim Coach
Nov 18, 2024, 05:51 PM
Florida Atlantic University (FAU) has fired head football coach Tom Herman after a disappointing season that saw the team compile a 2-8 record. Herman, who was in his second year with the Owls, amassed an overall record of 6-16. The decision comes less than 48 hours after FAU lost to Temple University in overtime; notably, both teams have now fired their head coaches following that game. Herman has three years remaining on his contract and is expected to be owed nearly $4 million. Chad Lunsford, FAU's special teams coordinator, tight ends coach, and assistant head coach—formerly the head coach at Georgia Southern—is expected to serve as interim head coach for the final two games of the season. This marks the eighth in-season head coaching change in the Group of Five conferences and the fourth in the American Athletic Conference. Remarkably, all four FBS teams with "Owls" as their mascot—FAU, Rice, Temple, and Kennesaw State—have fired their coaches this season.
