Commonwealth Fusion Systems to Build ARC, First 400-Megawatt Fusion Plant in Chesterfield County, Virginia by Early 2030s
Dec 17, 2024, 08:31 PM
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has announced plans to build the world's first commercial-scale fusion power plant, named ARC, in Chesterfield County, Virginia. The facility is expected to generate 400 megawatts of clean, firm, zero-carbon power and connect to the grid in the early 2030s. CFS selected the Virginia site after evaluating over 100 locations globally, citing its proximity to Washington, D.C., as a factor in the decision. The company is leasing the land from Dominion Energy, with whom it will collaborate to secure permits and integrate the power plant into the grid. This development marks a significant step toward realizing commercial fusion energy, following CFS's ongoing construction of a demonstration plant, SPARC, in Massachusetts, which aims to achieve net energy gain in the near future.
