Canada and US Boost Aid to Sudan, Committing Over $232 Million
Apr 14, 2024, 09:58 AM
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan has escalated after a year of violent conflict, prompting international responses. Canada has committed an additional $132.2 million in aid to address the dire situation. The conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, has led to the world's biggest displacement crisis, with the UN Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, discussing efforts to provide humanitarian assistance and cease the fighting. The UN has issued alerts on pervasive food insecurity and the potential for famine. The United Nations refugee chief warned that without adequate humanitarian aid, Sudanese refugees might head to Europe. The war has been described as creating the largest child displacement crisis by UNICEF, with 8.4 million people supported by WFP Sudan last year. The U.S. has announced an additional $100 million in aid, while the UN humanitarian campaign requires $2.7 billion to assist nearly half of Sudan's population, having received only about 5% of this funding so far. An international humanitarian support conference is scheduled in Paris to further address the crisis.
