Russia Captures Kurakhove in Donetsk, 32 km South of Pokrovsk, Amid Kursk Clashes
Jan 6, 2025, 09:45 AM
Russian forces have captured the town of Kurakhove in eastern Ukraine, marking a significant advance in the Donetsk region, according to the Russian Defense Ministry. The town, located 32 kilometers south of Pokrovsk, a key Ukrainian logistics hub, was described as a major stronghold that had been under siege for months. The capture of Kurakhove, which had a pre-war population of 22,000 and is situated near an important lithium deposit, is expected to accelerate Russia's efforts to control the entire Donetsk region. Kurakhove hosts an industrial zone, a coal power plant, a thermal power plant, a reservoir, and is accessible via a highway. Additionally, Russian forces have reportedly captured 13 square kilometers to the west of the town. This development comes amidst ongoing clashes in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have been reported to launch a new offensive. The Russian military claims to have repelled these attacks, though the situation remains tense.
